Either an Emmy isn't worth very much these days, or Hollywood actresses are finding that the publicity from spurning a nomination is worth more than the nomination itself. First Grey's Anatomy star -- and last year's Emmy winner -- Katherine Heigl removed her name from consideration for an Emmy in 2008, and now another has followed suit.Lindsay Lohan is not submitting her Ugly Betty performance for Emmy consideration. What? You don't remember Lindsay's performance, those few minutes of a flashback when Betty recalls being used as a dodge ball target in high school? Yeah, Lindsay really put in Emmy-worthy work there!
This is so ridiculous when it comes to Lindsay. There was no chance she'd be nominated, so removing her name is a stunt. On the other hand, Heigl's move is a real slap in the face to the writers of Grey's Anatomy.
Having won last year, she was virtually assured recognition with a nomination this year. For her to say that she doesn't think her performance is worthy because the material wasn't up to last year's standards speaks volumes. You have to wonder if Heigl isn't ready to move on and this is a way of greasing the wheels?
Tom O'Neil speculates about Lindsay's move, and also reminds us that those other headlines divas -- Britney Spears (How I Met Your Mother), Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana) and Mary-Kate Olsen (Weeds) -- are still in contention for Emmy nominations. Of that batch, I'd be stunned if any of them snag a nom. Meanwhile, Lindsay's press person, Leslie Sloane, said they chose to wait until next season, when LL will appear in six Ugly Betty episodes.
By the way, if any actor wants to legitimately make a statement by removing his/her name from consideration -- and that may indeed be what Heigl was doing -- how about someone like Tony Shaloub for Monk? He's won three Emmys for the same role, 2003, 2005 and 2006. Don't get me wrong, I think he's great as Adrian Monk. But bow out of the nominations and let someone else receive some recognition. You've nailed Monk and we all know it. The same was true all those years that Don Knotts won as Barney Fife (The Andy Griffith Show) and John Larroquette won as Dan Fielding (Night Court). Enough is enough.

And people don't have a problem with this in itself? Each year's nominees should be judged on their actual work and not by any earlier wins. This is exactly why Emmys keep going to the same group of people and shows year over year.

Remember when Ellen Burstyn was nominated for her 30 seconds appearance in Mrs. Harris? Now we don't want to revisit that fiasco again with Lohan do we?
I'd also add James Spader to be on that list with Tony Shaloub for being overly recognized year after year at the Emmys.
They better not snub FNL this year.

There's a BIG difference between Lindsey Lohan and Katherine Heigl removing themselves from the Emmy race...Heigl had to go and blame the writers, which was a bad move. But Lohan's just not bothering, because she knew she didn't have enough screentime to even be considered for a nomination.

I just hope too many people don't remove their names from consideration. We wouldn't want Harold Perrineau winning an Emmy and during his acceptance speech him yelling WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALT!

i can't help myself but say what a ridiculous blog post this is -- she was hardly in ugly betty this year and as someone else mentioned Ellen Burstyn did get a nod for 30 seconds -- so Lindsay did the right thing --- it's like with Lohan, she gets grief for whatever she does, this post included.
What Heigl did is just rude, bowing out is nice and yes tony shauloub should bow out so that James Roday of Psych can have a descent shot of a nomination but don't blame the writers.

how can you seriously call this a stunt, when no one reports who puts their names into emmy consideration except the media and what would she have to gain? The stunt would be if she did put her name. This is just another way to bash Lohan.
